Latest Newsletter
I didn’t know I was capable of running 2 marathons inside of 3 weeks, but I did it. The first came at London on April 26th and the second at the Star & Garter on 12th May for the Thame Runners committee meeting. I just about managed to chair the latter without loosing people to deep sleep and while I can assure you it wasn’t quite a 26.1 pinter, it did feel like it the next morning. Minutes will appear on the website shortly, but for now and without further ado, the latest monthly newsletter for June 2009:
SWET RUNS
The Summer Wednesday Evening Training (SWET) Runs have got off to a flying start with about 20 runners on each occasion and several staying behind for a social in the pub afterwards. The June schedule has now been finalised and by popular demand, we’ve slipped in an extra run on 3rd June at short notice. It will start from the Rose & Crown in Saunderton at 19:00, The June schedule shapes up as follows, but please keep your eye on the notice board in Thame Leisure Centre or on our website for changes and further updates.

The SWET Run from the 8 Bells in Long Crendon on 19th August, which Steve Grahm is kindly organising again this year will be over a new course this year that is a little shorter and more interesting than the previous one. There will be a loop across the fields towards Haddenham, a short road section and a return via Chearsley and Notley Abbey.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The championship continues to be fiercely contended in 2009, with numbers participating up on last year. We were spoilt for choice during May, with the Wokingham Half deferred from January and 2 runner’s choice events all taking place. Despite being only a few days apart Thame Runners turned out in force at both the Pretwood 10k and the Charndon 5k, with several runners achieving personal bests and there were Vet50 and Vet40 category prizes coming in the 10k for Thame too. The next races for your diary are as follows:

28 JUNE 2009 - THAME 10K: CALLING ON THAME RUNNERS
The Thame 10km committee have been working hard organising this year race with over 500 entries received so far to date, however the success of our event depends on the support of Thame Runners
Dieter has kindly agreed to organise marshals for this year, so if he has not already been in touch please make contact to Dieter direct or by email to

. The more marshals we have the safer the event is.
Alison Croughton & Pete White are organising the parking & race site and will also be requiring assistance, so again please contact them directly or to

. Don’t forget on the basis you have had instructions from Dieter you could help with parking and move on to a marshalling point. Or help with the Children’s fun run and at the race finish to remove timing tags?
On SATURDAY 27th from 4pm we start to prepare the site. The more people who turn up to help the easier this task becomes. So if you are able to help please call or email me, Mark Emmett at

. Remember, most of us take part in other clubs races throughout the year – and this is the one time that the Thame 10km asks for your commitment for help. Looking forward to hearing from you. Section by Mark Emmett – Race Director (thanks AB)
SATURDAY & SUNDAY MORNING RUNS - UPDATE
Our long weekend runs are now split into 2 groups - one faster group (Sunday) and one slower group (Saturday). Both groups meet up at 8:00 which is early but it gets the run out of the way so that you can get on with the rest of the day.
The groups are self organising and the leader is selected on the day, so you may have to arrive with a possible route in mind! With the exception of days when there is a Club Championship event, the faster group varies the location of the run according to the schedule shown here. To run comfortably with the faster group you should be able to run at 8min/mile for 9 or 10 miles.
The slower group is organised by John Lacey who can be seen at Thame Leisure Centre most Monday evenings or contacted using

.We'd love to have more people out on the weekend so please do come along. After all, if we all train as individuals, what is the point of having the club? Section by Richard Slater (thanks AB)
WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS THAME RUNNERS
Judith Harper and David Collins joined during May bringing our total to 88 members, so please make him feel very welcome to the Club when you see them. I myself extend a warm welcome to you both and hope that joining Thame satisfies your social and running fitness expectations.
THAME RUNNERS INVITATION EVENINGKeen to embrace change, the new committee changed the date of the Thame Runners Invitation evening to 29th July in order to bring the date closer to the Thame 10k in hope that we could attract more new runners to the club. More information will follow in the next news letter.
ELAN PRINTING CHINNOR CHRISTIAN AID CHARITY RUNS – PHOTOS
A Lord I am, but Litchfield I am not, so although I took lots of photographs at the Chinnor Runs during May, few of them have turned out well. I hope to post thumbnails of some of the best ones onto the website soon, but in the meantime if anyone would like to see my attempts at sports photography, then please let me have your race number and name and I’ll get them over to you. JOHN’S VISIT TO A PHYSIOLOGICAL TESTING FACILITY
On 28th May, Elite Physical Medicine, a sports medicine practice in Aylesbury launched a lactate profile and max test/monitoring facility alongside its traditional physiotherapy and gait analysis already on offer. John Lacey went along to watch the tests being done on a human “guinea pig” to determine heart rate and blood lactate response to incremental exercise. This type of testing is important to endurance road runners to monitor whether training has been effective and where specific weaknesses may lie. If anyone has any questions about what John discovered about this interesting demonstration, then please catch up with him on a club night or send an email to
